Bonjour! Welcome to Coffee Talk with King Francois I, episode eighteen. I am your host, Theodore Jander.
As was done in episode thirteen, Something to Help You Sleep 1.0, I am again bringing to all Ren Faire performers, merchants, staff, and patrons a little help for going-to-sleep. If going to sleep is a piece of cake for you, I also hope this episode will at least bring a bit of peace and calm to your day. For your listening pleasure, I will be narrating two short stories. First will be, “How Robin Hood Came to Be an Outlaw” from The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. And second, I will read “The Winter's Tale” from Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare by E. Nesbit, which is a collection containing adaptations of several Shakespeare plays.
But before we do that, you will hear the response I received from a friend and fellow performer, Rebecca, where she shares her coffee preferences and a favorite Ren Faire experience story. I thank Rebecca for taking the time to answer these few questions.
Now lay your head down or sit back and relax.Quiet your mind to dream of Renaissance knicknacks.Become burden free by releasing your worries,As you drift off to sleep with some Renaissance stories.

Episode 14 - A Latte Coffee

Friday Mar 24, 2023

Friday Mar 24, 2023

Episode 14:
Bonjour! Welcome to Coffee Talk with King Francois I, episode fourteen, A Latte Coffee. As the title of this episode suggests, we are going to delve into one of the important themes of this podcast, coffee. Now, I realize that this podcast’s main focus is on the discovery of the tales, trials, and talents of Renaissance Festival performers, merchants, staff, and diehard patrons, with a smattering of helpful Ren Faire oriented installments. That said, you will recall in episode nine where I interviewed myself, me conversing with me as King Francois I, I shared that coffee is almost the lifeblood of rennies, performers, cast, and patrons. And a great many of us start our Festival days with coffee. So, it seemed to be a great pairing for a podcast. The conversations shared in the episodes essentially take place with a cup of coffee in hand, beginning with a brief chat about coffee before making our way into more Ren Faire related topics. Therefore, I thought it would be beneficial to discover a bit more about this much beloved beverage.
In these episodes where I tend to do most, if not all the talking, I am adding a new segment. It will follow the format of the included response I received from a fellow cast member and friend, Chris Siebert, where he shares his coffee preferences and a favorite Ren Faire experience story. So, grab a cup of your favorite java, sit back, and enjoy this episode of Coffee Talk with King Francois I.
UPDATE: I came across the following informative article on Twitter via Hexnub.com after I released this episode. For your reading and learning pleasure, I have included a link:This Is the Best Time to Drink Coffee, Scientists Say

Episode 13:
Bonjour! Welcome to Coffee Talk with King Francois I, episode thirteen. As Renaissance Festivals are now in full swing each weekend, I wanted to bring to all Ren Faire performers, merchants, staff, and patrons a little help for your going-to-sleep struggles. Or, if going to sleep is a piece of cake for you, I hope this episode will at least bring a bit of calm to your day. For your listening pleasure, I will be narrating some Renaissance era poetry. The title and author will be stated first, followed by the poem. Two things before we begin our sleep or calm time. First, another little poem about coffee written just for you:
A King’s NightCap-puccino
The Ren Faire day is done.I gaze at the setting sun.My energy wanes, what shall I do?Perhaps a goblet of rich, dark brew.
I contemplate my current situation,Which java to choose for my caffeination.A latte, mocha, or a frappuccino?I know! For me, a King’s nightcap-puccino.
And second, a Renaissance-text-inspired musical selection, Lullaby. A little background on this piece. For one of my first compositions while working on my master’s, I was tasked with setting a lullaby-type text for voice and accompanying instrument. The reason for a lullaby was due to the fact that my daughter had been born a few months prior. Thus began a search for a poem about sleep or going to sleep. The words that caught my heart were penned by Thomas Dekker who lived from around 1572-1632. What emerged was a delightful lullaby. And like much music of the Renaissance, this piece, written for soprano and harp, displays some wonderful word painting. Lullaby was premiered at my Graduate Composition Recital at Webster University in April of 2005, and performed by soprano, Sarah Dimmitt and harpist, Elizabeth Gerberding LeBlanc.
Now lay your head down or sit back and relax.Quiet your mind to dream of Renaissance knicknacks.Let go of your worries, becoming burden free, As you drift off to sleep with some calming poetry.

Episode 12 - What’s Next?

Friday Mar 03, 2023

Friday Mar 03, 2023

Episode 12:
Bonjour! So, life has been interesting as of late. Hence the delay in releasing the next episode, which is and is not this one. Allow me to explain. Yes, this is episode twelve, but not the original one I had planned. That installment will be number thirteen, which is slated to be released on Friday, March 10. And because of the happenings of life, I will be releasing episodes every other week.
That said, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what to expect in the upcoming episodes for this podcast. Enjoy this installment of Coffee Talk with King Francois I.
